When Imaad Jacobs walked into our studio, it was immediately clear that this was someone who had earned every lesson the hard way.

With 11 years in the financial markets, Imaad carries the kind of quiet confidence that only comes from having been through the full cycle — the excitement, the losses, the pivots, and eventually, the consistency.

His story begins not on a trading desk, but in a family business. Raised watching his parents run a cold storage and butchery operation from Monday to Sunday, Imaad learned early what a life consumed by work looked like — and decided it wasn't what he wanted.

After school he drifted through a call center job, earning R30,000 a month in his early twenties, while secretly funding trading accounts on the side. Then his father passed away, and everything shifted.

He left the corporate world to help his mother run the family business. Two years later, with a wife and a newborn, he sat her down and told her he was going full-time into trading.

I sold my car — a BMW 330D — for R168,000. That was our living expenses for seven months. I gave myself seven months to make it.

That decision — the kind most people would never make — became the turning point. Not because it was comfortable, but because it forced real commitment.

What followed were years of refining his approach. Strategy hopping, mentor hopping, and eventually landing on a discipline that combines fundamental analysis with technical structure. Imaad now trades just 3 to 4 times a month, spends 10 to 15 minutes on the charts each day, and sets his alerts on Sunday evenings so the week runs itself.

One of the most valuable things he shared during our conversation was his approach to fundamentals — something many traders ignore entirely.

The chart gives us price. But price is just a depiction of how strong or weak a currency is. If you're only looking at price, you're always going to be left behind.

His method starts with the currency indexes — DXY for the dollar, AXY for the Australian dollar, JXY for the yen. Before a single chart is opened, the directional bias is already established. The chart confirms it. That simple shift, he says, cuts out the guesswork entirely.

He also uses ChatGPT to summarise macroeconomic conditions for the week ahead — not as a shortcut, but as a tool to stay informed without spending hours reading central bank speeches.

Away from the markets, Imaad is deeply grounded in faith and family. He wakes early to pray and read, drops his daughter at school, plays paddle or hits the gym, and then turns his attention to the morning messages he sends his mentorship students.

His mentorship structure is intentional. Students are grouped by account size and progress through tiers only when they demonstrate consistent profitability. The goal he calls "building an empire" — starting with a $6,000 prop account, passing it, reinvesting, and scaling systematically to $200,000.

For traders who are just starting out, his advice is direct: find one mentor, trust the process, and stop chasing strategies. Signals don't work. Bots don't work. What works is time, discipline, and learning to move on after every loss like an athlete who forgets the last play the moment the whistle blows.

Imaad Jacobs is exactly the kind of trader Market Gateway was built to spotlight — not for the lifestyle, but for the substance behind it.
